MAKING BAGS: HOW TO MAKE SHINY BAGS OUT OF BEADS

BEAD BAG -
Hey friends,
It's been a lovely run so far. Hope you all have been loving the series? I really appreciate the mails you have been sending and I do encourage you to equally leave comments here as well. On our collection today, I've gone around the net to get you two of the most illustrative steps to making some very beautiful bags or purses using beads. I fully give credit to the sources from where I have picked these wonderful images. Enjoy!

1. How to make beaded bags: by entrepreneur.com

There’s no hard-and-fast rule when beading, but make sure the beads fall naturally on the cloth and are
secure, and the threads don’t show. Next, combine beads of different sizes and colors.

Materials needed:

2 pieces of satin or other cloth (about a quarter of a yard each), P35 to P50
Assorted plastic beads, P50 to P100
Nylon strings
3 lobster locks
2 double-ring locks
Pins
Needles and thread
A ruler or tape measure
Scissors

You can make two to three bags with a yard of cloth depending on the size and style you prefer. Keep a catalogue of your products as reference.

Getting started:

1. Cut the satin cloth to a quarter of a yard. (You’ll need two pieces of cloth for the main bag and the lining, so make sure the sheets are of the same size.)

2. Fold the cloth and put about half an inch allowance for stitches later. Use pins to secure the sides.

3. Sew the beads into the cloth based on your design, but remember it’s best to have a design in mind before you start the beadwork on the satin cloth, which becomes the bag’s exterior.

4. When you’ve completed the beadwork, close the edges of the two pieces of satin cloth and then sew them together either by hand or by sewing machine.

5. Attach the cloth where the lining and the bag’s exterior are placed back to back. Do the basting first to make sure the cloth stays in place, and then seal the sides of the main bag by sewing them together. Go for a clean look using blanket stitches if you’re sewing by hand. Make sure the edges are aligned and the stitches are not crooked. Turn the bag inside out later.

6. Sew two small metal rings into the two sides of the bag where the straps are to be attached. To make the strap, put beads on either nylon thread or wire and then attach the two ends with lobster locks. (The strap is detachable for this bag.) Use pliers to attach and use a comfortable length for straps.

2. Handmade beaded handbag - by Eco Friendly Junk Makeover

Years ago I bought a big bag of blue crystal-like beads and made 2 handbags as gifts for 2 of my friends. I've kept the remaining 1/3 of the beads and never had the time to do anything about it. I dug them out one fine day and decided that I must finish up the beads and put them to good use.

After several hours of weaving and dismantling and reassembling, over and over again, I finally made myself a summery handbag that I'm happy with. The beads to make the hook for the loop are from my collection of old and used beads, often cut from old shoes or broken beaded accessories. Some leftovers are from my other beads projects such as bracelet and necklaces.

I can fit in it a wallet, a mobile phone, a book, a pair of sunglasses, a hat, a foldable umbrella, a spare canvas shopping bag (just in case), keys, a tube of E45 and a lipstick. So when I don't feel like carrying my big handmade multi-compartment bag, this would come in handy. Sweet!

Here is how I started the basic weaving process. 4-bead pattern gets a little tricky when making 3-D turns. I've only learned the basic pattern weaving once from an old beading book, but that did not come with a bag design manual. So I did spend many hours figuring out how to make those 3-D corners. What I did was weaving the beads into a long and wide enough piece then folded the sides to add new beads to tie them into 3-D.

This diagram is also the same basic process for the blue napkin rings.

That's all for this time folks. See you all at my next submission. Cheers!
