THE ARCHITECT:
It is the first edition of the year for THE ARCHITECT and Arc. Duru is going to use this first class to teach how to customize materials for the curtain wall frames and mullion on Revit. There is a lot to learn. Read on.
Compliments of the
season folks. How did your holiday go? Mine was great. I had nothing to do with
Revit though apart from a couple of jobs I had to round up before the new year.
Anyways, I thought about today's class and felt it is something I could share
with you guys. And being an early edition-time frame here on 360talkatives, I
decided to give it a shot. It is a very
brief class but it should definitely save you some good load of stress. As
always, I am willing to listen to problems and challenges from the softwares I
treat here when posted on the comments thread under this post. Do enjoy today's
class. Happy reading!
HOW TO CHANGE THE 'COLOUR'
OF YOUR CURTAIN WALL MULLION AND FRAME ON REVIT
A curtain wall is
basically a glass wall. It can be a cladding on a solid sandcrete/concrete wall
or a stand-alone glazed plane. On Revit, you can either apply it as a wall
without host or if you wish to have beams/lintels show, you can apply it on a
solid generic wall. In today's class, I will be showing you how to change the
colours of the curtain wall frames/mullions (the steel or aluminum profiles
that stay the glass sheets into position). Most users of Revit do not know how
to do this so you often find them using the curtain wall in the default state.
The frames and mullions have white (or off-white) as the default colour. (See Image
1)

The gospel truth is
that, to change the colour of your curtain wall mullion or frame, all you need
to do is to change the material assigned to these mullions/frames. However, as
simple as that sounds, getting to execute it is mostly farfetched. Reason being
that more often than not, users do not know which material property/category
has been assigned to the millions in the Material Library. Equally, you cannot
get to change the material of the frame by just clicking on the curtain wall
and attempting to effect material change through the Properties dialogue of the
wall. Such option isn't available there. So follow these very few and simple
steps to change the colour of your curtain wall mullions and frames.
NOTE:
I have used Revit 11 here simply because of how popular it is. Revit 9 and
Revit 11 are the most popular Revit softwares in use among architects. If you
do not use any of these versions, it is still not a problem as all you need to
do is to locate the position of the tools I have used here on your own
interface. The functions are still exactly the same.
You will also notice
that some of the components I will use in this class may not look like the one
on your own software screen. Reason is that I have customized a lot of the
things on my interface but they will in no way affect the result of what we
wish to do.
STEP 1.
LOCATE THE MATERIAL
LIBRARY
I assume you already have
a curtain wall you wish to effect the colour change on existing in the project.
It is in the Material Library that you can find what to change to effect a
colour change on the said frames. To locate your Material Library:
Ø Click
on the 'Manage' menu tab and select 'Materials' (see Image 2)
Image 2 |
Ø A
dialogue box will appear. This is the Material dialogue and it contains the
Material Library. (see Image 3)
Image 3 |
STEP 2.
IDENTIFYING THE CURTAIN
WALL FRAME MATERIAL
Now let us identify the
Material that is usually assigned to the mullion and frame by default.
Ø On
the left side of the dialogue, search for 'Metal-Aluminum' (See Image 4)
Image 4 |
Ø Click
on this option. This is the default Material that is assigned to a curtain wall
mullion or frame.
STEP 3.
CHANGING THE MATERIAL
Let us now customize
the material.
Ø With
the 'Metal-Aluminum' option still selected, click on the 'Render Appearance
tab' to the right of the Material dialogue. (see Image 5)
Image 5 |
Ø Click
on the 'Replace' tab at the extreme right and choose any material of your
choice. (see Image 6 for the material option I chose)
Image 6 |
Ø Keep
clicking 'Ok' until all dialogues are closed

This is how to get curtain
wall to have mullions and frames of any colour. You can see image 7 for an
illustration of the final product after the colour has been changed. Mind, when
I say colour here, I refer to the material colour/texture. I had to make it
plain for those of us who do not have the technical proficiency. Hoping to hear from you all on how easy it was
for you to apply this. Cheers!
FROM MY ARCHIVES:
Here is another work from my archives. It was
done long ago as you can see. The aim is to give up-coming users of these
softwares samples of what their works could be like despite being new with the
softwares. I did this one just a few weeks after learning the Photoshop
software. Enjoy the entry. Regards!

The 'Name/Url' option is advisable. You can fill in just 'Name' and ignore the 'url box'.
