Dr Myles Munroe's death: The world needs leaders, not politicians

Dr. Myles Munroe:

As tributes after tributes pour in following the death of a leading motivational speaker, Duru Chimezie explains why we should be convinced that people like Munroe are who we really need in a world that begs for leadership.

If we can be a little sincere with ourselves, how many of us would genuinely claim that we can mention 10 to 15 countries of the world (in no specific order) with The Bahamas coming in at any point? In fact most people that will read this piece will likely be hearing for the first time, that The Bahamas is a country of the world. Most have always thought it is a state or province in any of the North American countries. This is a striking but quite obvious one to admit to.

I first heard about the death of Dr (and Pastor) Myles Munroe, from a relative's friend. Of course, the first impression was 'just another unfortunate rumor'. I never wanted to think it was serious until I eventually came across it over the internet. Myles was indeed dead. And in the most gruesome of ways. I was shocked, perplexed and ultimately transfixed to my seat. I couldn't believe my eyes. Neither could I believe the world anymore. How could it? How could Myles Munroe die? Death was indeed cruel. Taking a life when it is all accepted to matter most. I was later going to think, that I had felt no such kind of pain and bitterness in all my life on hearing the death of someone. Not even that of a relative. Myles was indeed the rarest of his kind, that had found a place in so many hearts.

It is not a case as that of Mrs. Thatcher which reactions upon her death were ultimately divided. Of course she was the woman warrior everyone called her and was indeed a major step towards the liberalization of the woman ilk a bulk of the world sought for. She was all that but yet her death and fancy funeral still courted controversy. The same can be said of the recent passing of the President of Zambia, Michael Sata. A much admired leader who has received tributes all over the world for his bold decision to make a 'white' his assistant despite being a ruler of a major black nation. However, despite all that, little can be said about how his life touched people (of other nations and race) directly. Despite his seeming obvious embrace of tolerance, a good number of people only knew he was President of Zambia just after his death. Contrast this to Mandela, and you will get a better impression.

Myles Munroe was not a Mandela but was obviously part of that rare race of people whose geographical inclinations never limited their impact in a world that intently yearns for leaders. Tributes pouring in as I write keep referring to how he did really help put Bahamas on the map. Despite his religious beliefs, his message, leadership and inspiring dedication cut across all belief systems. He was never reported to have rejected invitations based on such divides. He was known to have travelled across the world to speak to government people, leaders and owners and managers of people. He authored and co-authored over 100 books and was strongly an influence in the Christian community.

Myles Munroe will not be remembered for his demonstrations and protests for a change in one major global policy. Neither will he be remembered for a fight for freedom over unfair oppression against a minority group. No, he will not be remembered for any of those. But he will be probably remembered more often than the thousands that have spent their entire life fighting for these things. The world does need people who are only interested in a situation when it concerns them, their relatives or their people. The world does not need people who are interested in guiding other people just because it will first colour their careers and CVs. The world only needs persons who will hand the meaning of existence back to the people. Persons who will lead by telling them who they are and getting them to be world changers in all they do. While Myles Munroe who was obviously a leader did this, most politicians are only interested in reminding us what is wrong about everything and constantly asking for funds from us to get them fixed without really giving us results. The world does not need politicians, rather it needs leaders. Myles was a leader and will continue to be, even in death.
