360MEDICS:
On 360MEDICS this
week, KELECHI BENITA exposes the many uncommon medicinal values of the apple
fruit. Her advice; eat an apple every day. Read to know these benefits.
Apple the king of
all fruits have long been associated with the biblical story of adam and eve. Delicious
and crunchy, apple fruit is one of the most popular and favourite fruits ever
known. As with the well known adage ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’, the
fruit has been of tremendous good to people who are health conscious and love
fitness who firmly believe in the concept of ‘health is wealth’. Apples are
gotten from the medium sized tree belonging to the rosaceae family. The apple
tree is thought to be originated in the mineral rich mountain ranges of
Kazakhstan but are being cultivated in many parts of the world today. Apple
fruits are usually oval or pear shape. It often has different colours depending
upon the cultivar type and this is usually noticed on the outer peel. We have
the red apple, the yellow apple and the green apple. Internally, its crispy
juicy pulp is off-white to cream in colour and has a mix of mild sweet and tart
flavor. Its seeds have a bitter taste making it inedible. By all aspect, the
fruit is indispensible.
Apart from health
care and nutrition, apples are also known for their medicinal values. Research
shows that its nutrient may play a role in promoting human health in a number
of ways. Often called the nutritional power house, the potential benefits they
bring help give us a good health with the prevention of many diseases. The
vitamins present in apples help in maintaining the red blood cells and keeping
the nervous system in good order. Apples contain pectin which helps bulk up the
stool to treat diarrhea and constipation. Apple peels contain a chemical called
ursolic acid that is suspected to have a role in building the body and in
metabolism. Apples also contain some chemicals that seem to be able to kill
bacteria. Apples are also good for the respiratory system as the fruits
protects against cancer of the lungs by combating radical cells that form in
the respiratory tract that can become cancerous in the future. Apple fruit
contains a great quantity of vitamin C which helps the body develop resistance
to infectious agents. They are also low in calories.
An apple a day
also reduces the risk of skin cancer and liver problems. Fresh apples can be
readily available in the stores all round the season. Choose fresh, bright,
firm textured apples with rich flavor. Avoid those with pressure marks all over
their surface as this may indicate spoilage. Fresh apples can be kept at room
temperature for few days and stored inside the refrigerator for up to two or
three weeks. Go on and eat at least one apple per day and make it a part of
your daily diet. I hope to be back next week. Thanks for reading!

A very good piece on apples. I wish to ask you anyway, between the red and green apples, which do you recommend anyone to take more often? And why?
ReplyDeleteam really sorry this came late...was having some little challenges. there is really no difference nutritionally between the two. the only difference between the two is that while the green apple has a sour taste, the red apple has a sweet taste,
