HAPPENING NOW:
In what was described as a commando-style operation, 10 fully-armed-policemen in mufti, were reported to have besieged a popular Pentecostal church in Lagos, People of Peculiar Ministry International, Araromi, Igando, Lagos State, dispersed worshippers and whisked away the pastor and some members over an illegal N300,000 debt collection.
The policemen were reportedly dispatched by the Divisional Police Officer, Amukoko Division, Abayomi Agbana, a chief superintendent of police (CSP), and had initially lied that they were from GID Ikeja to execute a court order.
When the church protocol officer, Samuel Ajakaiye, demanded to see the court order, the officers allegedly descended on him, brutalised him and forced their way into the church. According to Ajakaiye, “They scattered the office, kitchen, rest rooms, broke the door and, the worst part, they humiliated the pastor and dragged and forced him into the bus, they also arrested and beat up four members that questioned their conduct.
“But instead of the GID Ikeja, they took us to Amukoko police division, where they subjected us to more ridicule and trauma until 7:00pm when people intervened from higher police formation.”
Hepzibah, the popular televangelist also known as Baba Peculiar, queried the arrest and raiding of his offices without a search warrant or prior invitation.
“How can they invade a church without legal authority? They came all the way from Apapa and did not register their presence at the nearest police station. When have the police turned to debt collectors?
These men invaded our church, brutalised members and made away with three of my handsets and over half a million naira,” he said.
