Michael Zehaf-Bibeau Named As Ottawa Shooter By U.S. Media

CBS Evening News says it has identified a dead suspect in the shooting of a soldier in Ottawa on Wednesday.

The network tweeted just before 1 p.m. (American time) that the shooter was Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, a Canadian who was born in 1982.

Zehaf-Bibeau, 32, was raised in Quebec, according to CTV News, and was a Canadian convert to Islam, Reuters said.

Canadian authorities had considered him a "high-risk traveller" and his passport was taken away, according to The Globe and Mail.

Global News reporter Domenic Fazioli tweeted that Zehaf-Bibeau's name appears three times in Montreal's court database following arrests for possession of marijuana and PCP in 2004.

Fazioli went on to say that the name "Michael Bibeau-Zehaf" also shows up in the database. This person was convicted of marijuana possession in 2009.

Michael Zehaf-Bibeau was arrested five times while in Montreal: it was for drug possession three times and two more times for "not respecting parole conditions, Fazioli said.

Vancouver Sun reporter Kim Bolan wrote that he had been charged with a robbery that happened in Vancouver in 2011.

Zehaf-Bibeau was later convicted of uttering threats and spent one day behind bars.

Police confirmed at an afternoon press conference that a male shooting suspect was dead after a soldier was killed after being shot at the National War Memorial.
