94th minute goal gives Manchester United a draw against Chelsea

Jose Mourinho unhappy with ref as Chelsea draw at Manchester United

Chelsea had a perfect opportunity to pull away at the top of the Premier League Sunday with a win over Manchester United, one day after Manchester City fell to West Ham, but a late equalizer from Robin van Persie stunned the Blues and earned Manchester United well-deserved point.
Without injured strikers Diego Costa and Loïc Rémy, Chelsea was forced to start 36-year-old Didier Drogba — who scored a classic Drogba goal off a corner kick in the 53rd minute. Seconds after David De Gea saved a point blank shot from Eden Hazard, Drogba broke free from Rafael and redirected a header to the near post, which deflected off the head of van Persie.

Manchester United held Chelsea to only a few real goal-scoring opportunities, though, and Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was eventually punished for trying to stall the game out by bringing on defensive midfielder John Obi Mikel and center back Kurt Zouma.

In a game filled with cards (referee Phil Dowd handed out 10 yellows), Branislav Ivanovic was given his second yellow card and sent off in the 94th minute for what appeared very soft challenge on Ángel Di María.

On the ensuing free kick, Thibaut Courtois saved Fellaini’s header, but the ball fell to van Persie, who smashed home to earn United a shocking point.

With the draw, Chelsea moves to 23 points on the season, four clear of second-place Southampton. Manchester United is in eighth with 13 points. Mourinho wasn’t very happy with Dowd after the match, but praised his team’s performance.
